Difference Between cPanel and WHM

WebHost Manager (WHM) offers you managerial control over your VPS or dedicated server. It permits a hosting provider to handle a customer’s account.

WHM also works as a reseller control panel. It is what our customers receive with all reseller hosting plans. They use it to manage all their resold hosting accounts in their reseller plans. In a reseller account a user has limited rights in WHM as compared to VPS and Dedicated Server hosting. Hence a few functions are not accessible for them:

You can perform following actions using WHM:

  • Add domains to the server
  • Manage features of hosting packages and accounts
  • Generate custom hosting packages
  • Generate individual accounts
  • Change DNS zone records for every domain or subdomain
  • Perform basic system and control panel maintenance
  • Reset passwords/contact email addresses for cPanel accounts
  • Access resold accounts without entering login details
  • Edit Resource Limits for cPanel accounts
  • Set up private name servers on the server

cPanel is designed for managing separate hosting accounts on the server. End users/clients are able to perform following functions:

  • Check website statistics
  • Add/remove addon domains and subdomains
  • Create email accounts and manage email settings and SPAM protection
  • Edit DNS records for their domains
  • Manage databases and backups
  • Upload and manage files for their websites
  • Install CMS using Softaculous

Remember that when accessing cPanel via WHM of a reseller or root user, you are able to manage almost all options of the end user’s cPanel. However, some of the menus (like google apps) could be accessed only when you are logged in as an individual cPanel user.

Here is the arrangement of WHM/cPanel users depending on their permissions:

1. Server Administrator Panel (root access to WHM)

The highest-level user is the 'root' user. The highest-level user is the server administrator who has full admittance to the server. The administrator of the server has full control over all WHM functions. An administrator can change global server settings as well as customize settings for users with more limited privileges. A root user can access all levels of WHM interface, including reseller WHM and an end cPanel user. There is only one root user per server.

2. Reseller Panel (WHM)

The reseller user is second in command to the server administrator. A reseller user has more limited set of features as compared to the root user. These features are limited by the server administrator.  They affect the reseller’s customers’ accounts but not the whole server. Access to reseller account is given with Reseller Panel (WHM). Here they can handle all their resold accounts. The reseller also has access to all created accounts. The rights of the reseller are set by the server administrator. There could be multiple resellers per server.

3. Main Reseller cPanel

cPanel provide by Sky Host is a control panel used to handle the hosting account under your main domain. When you sign up for a Reseller package, you choose the main domain name. It can be accessed through the main cPanel account. Login details for the cPanel come along with WHM account details. In case you want to reset the password of WHM, it is required to reset the main cPanel account password, and they will both synchronize.

4. cPanel Account (Resold)

Reseller accounts can be easily generated, over looked and maintained in Reseller Panel. If you still need any help or facing any difficulty then you can get in touch with for further detail. Our dedicated profesionals are always there to provide 24/7 customer support.
